11:26p
I moved into my apartment a few weeks ago and am in the process of decorating. However, I have two issues. Firstly, there is a plant hook on the ceiling that was left from the last people and I'd like to use it, but don't want to put a plant there. Any suggestions or pictures would be great. Secondly, do any of you have any pictures of cheap ways to decorate HUGE walls without making them look too overdone?

11:55p Art Reception!
Just a reminder, gang, my art show reception is this Friday, from 6-8, at the Jordan Arts Center in Cary. (Harrison & Maynard, under the water tower.)
See original art in person! See the artist looking frazzled and silently wondering whether she will get all her illustrations done on time! Free cheese!

2:31p I've wiped the file? .... I've wiped all the files? .... I've wiped the INTERNET? I don't even have

The official feed now includes the byline at the top, as requested by several people using feed readers that don't display the author properly.
For those who, like me, had trouble making out the words, here are the lyrics to "I Google You", posted by Mr. G in the comment thread to a blog post. The whole discussion there is interesting.
Many people wrote in to offer suggestions for a collective noun for Johns, most of them thinking along similar lines. Among the most intuitive were: a flushing, a trick, and a gospel.
Interesting search queries by which people arrived at neilgaiman.com over the past month: [oops nudity] - 51 hits, [community suffering] - 27, and [good omens slash] - 6. And now many more people will be ending up here for each of those.
Lastly, let's go to the mailbag!
From: John Lorentz Subject: Sometimes Real Life Is Too Strange
Neil,
A few nights ago, some crooks took advantage of some gullible people here in Portland by posing as Wells Fargo security guards and met people coming to make use of the night deposit slot at a local bank.
"The night deposit slot here is out of order. But if you'll put your deposit in this bag, we'll deliver it to another branch in the morning."
On the news tonight, our local NBC affiliate (KGW) pointed out that this is exactly like a scheme described in AMERICAN GODS, giving the page number in the trade edition of the book and holding that page up to the camera. (They don't have the video up of the version of the story with the reference to your book--if they post it, I'll send you the link for when you finally return to good Internet service.)
So if there's a sudden surge in sales of American Gods here in Portland, that's probably why.:)
John
This is actually not the first time such news was reported here.

9:54p
Hello, I'm a twenty-something student. 2 years ago I've moved out of my parents house into my very own flat with literary nothing but my closet full of clothes. The rest was racked up through the years. It's still a bit plain on the walls, but I'm trying to set some nerd-ish course. ;p

9:31p Living on Air
This is a link to a BBC documentary made nearly a decade ago. It talks about the biological causes of eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa. It astonishes me that all this research has been around for so long, yet so many people, including doctors, don't understand eating disorders.
One thing that I noticed in particular was a part where they found anorexia cases in a society where being fat is considered beautiful, and that the number of cases was proportional (given the population size) to the number of cases in the UK and the US. This ties in with what I believe, which is that societal pressures to be thin aren't that big of a contributer compared to the biological factors. My main belief for this comes from finding statistics about eating disorders in Finland (I don't have the link). I've spent a fair amount of time in Finland the population in general has a very healthy attitude to food and exercise. Yet the statistics for anorexia and anorexic behaviours were actually slightly higher for a national Finnish survey than for the reported cases in America.
The documentary talks a lot about stress and the biological causes/effects of stress behaviours. I'm certain it was stress that was the biggest contributor in my disorder because I have brief relapses whenever I have to study for exams.

1:32p Welcome Week?
Since the people in the dorms move in this weekend, there isn't the usual Welcome Week like in years past. Apparently a lot of the usual events are going on but it's not really the same. I know when I was a freshman I needed more than a couple days to figure out my way around Berkeley. Would you guys have preferred it shorter?

5:28p Best restaurant's (not thai...)
Hey,
What would you consider a classic, affordable, date-friendly restaurant within walking distance of the downtown BART in Berkeley? I'm too old/feeble to make it to College Ave. anymore. I've eaten too much thai this week. Where in the world should I go?
PS Are the Ethiopian places on Telegraph any good?

1:19a gre/grad school
Hi, I am looking for advice on taking the GRE and applying to grad school from those of you who have been there and done that. Specifically... how soon before taking the GRE should I register for it? Other than books/prep courses, any tips on studying for it? Math is my weaker suit thus far. BTW, the grad programs I am looking at are those that offer a masters in journalism.

My room as of now.. always a work in progress.. I will probably not post again until Jan/Feb of 09. Yes, I have a lot of fandom... but I like to think I display it tastefully. I bet you would never guess that I live in Las Vegas, Nevada... right? Image Heavy- I went a little camera crazy... ( Read more... )
